To the Honorable President and Administration of the United States of America, We, the members of the Pakistani-American community, respectfully bring to your attention a growing concern regarding the misuse of U.S. freedoms and institutional platforms by foreign political actors. The political landscape in Pakistan is deeply polarized, characterized by extreme propaganda, hate speech, and the systematic spread of mal-information and disinformation. Unfortunately, these divisive tactics have now extended to the United States, threatening to disrupt social harmony, radicalize diaspora communities, and damage U.S.-Pakistan relations. Concerns Regarding Foreign Political Influence on U.S. Soil
- Political Incitement and Hate Speech in the U.S.: Certain Pakistani political factions have established U.S.-based chapters that actively engage in spreading hate, inciting violence, and fostering division within our diaspora community. These groups exploit America’s democratic freedoms and political openness to promote discord, drawing the Pakistani-American youth into ideological extremism.
- Misuse of U.S. Government and Congressional Platforms: A concerning trend has emerged where foreign political actors utilize official U.S. government and congressional platforms to push narratives that serve their own political interests in Pakistan. The most recent example is a briefing held in committee rooms of Capitol Hill on January 22, which Pakistani social media has falsely framed as U.S. government intervention in Pakistan’s judicial process. This is being manipulated to suggest that the U.S. administration is pressuring the Pakistani government to release ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned on corruption charges. Such actions fuel anti-American sentiment among politically alienated groups in Pakistan and unfairly implicate the U.S. in domestic Pakistani politics.
- Attempts to Pressure the U.S. Government for Political Gains: Another alarming development is the effort by certain Pakistani-American factions to lobby the U.S. State Department to impose entry bans on Pakistan’s Minister of Interior, Mohsin Naqvi. This is being done in retaliation for lawful actions taken by Pakistani security forces to prevent violent protests and attempts to storm the Pakistani Parliament during the official visit of the President of Belarus. Such lobbying efforts, driven by political agendas rather than legitimate human rights concerns, distort reality and misuse U.S. diplomatic channels.
Request for Safeguards Against Malicious Political Influence Given these developments, we urge the U.S. administration to take necessary measures to safeguard American institutions and communities from becoming entangled in Pakistan’s internal political conflicts. Specifically, we request:
- Stronger Oversight on the Use of U.S. Government and Congressional Platforms by foreign political entities to prevent their exploitation for spreading disinformation and incitement.
- Monitoring of Hate Speech and Political Radicalization Efforts within diaspora communities to protect Pakistani-American youth from ideological manipulation.
- Non-Interference in Pakistan’s Judicial and Legal Processes, ensuring that political narratives do not influence U.S. foreign policy decisions concerning Pakistan.
- Prevention of the Misuse of U.S. Diplomatic Channels to advance the political agendas of foreign political groups seeking to manipulate American policy for their benefit.
Conclusion The Pakistani-American community values the strong U.S.-Pakistan relationship and supports efforts to ensure stability, economic progress, and mutual cooperation between our two nations. However, allowing foreign political propaganda and disinformation campaigns to take root in the U.S. threatens not only our community’s well-being but also U.S. national interests. We urge the administration to implement necessary safeguards against such misuse and to reaffirm a policy of non-interference in Pakistan’s domestic affairs. We look forward to your consideration of this urgent matter.
